Tree Music

August 10, 2011

There are times when you find something brand new that you can’t wait to share with everyone you know. That’s how we felt after seeing Tree Music‘s first ever show on July 7th at the Larimer in Denver. An eclectic little band of folkies, Tree Music delivers harmony, toe-tapping melodies, and a really fresh sound that had us smiling all night. Of course, we are suckers for any band that has two ukulele players! Tree Music’s lineup includes Dan Grant on guitar, vocals, and ukulele; Scott Ten Hoeve on guitar and vocals; Bill Goldstein on ukulele, guitar, and melodica (melodica!); Brandy Burdick on vocals; Ajay Anderson on keyboard and synths; and Andy Kim on drums. They are now busy recording an EP, and we’re looking forward to great things.

1. What is your hometown?

Brandy:

Military brat from Sasebo, Japan to Honolulu, Hawaii to Aurora, Colorado.

Bill:

Aurora, CO.

Scott:

Before I start all this, I want everyone to know that the only reason anything is spelled right is thanks to spell check and that lovely little red line. As far as everything else that is involved in language goes, I know very little.
I was born in Ridgewood, NJ in nineteen hundred and eighty-eight . Shortly after that i moved to Aurora, Co where i have lived ever since.

Dan:

Dallas, TX.

Ajay:

Denver, CO.

2. With what fictional character do you most identify?

Brandy:

Tanya Mousekewitz from “Fievel Goes West”

Bill:

Dante (“Clerks” or “Divine Comedy” you choose)

Scott:

Lister from “Red Dwarf.”

Dan:

Daffy Duck, always getting fucked over…

Ajay:

Tommy from “Rugrats,” a good leader.

3. In the movie of your life, cast an actor to play you.

Brandy:

Claire Danes

Bill:

Jason Schwartzman

Scott:

Its a toss-up between Sam Rockwell and Gary Oldman. Though if it was Gary Oldman it would have to be the Gary Oldman from between “Sid and Nancy” and “Leon the Professional.”

Dan:

Elijah Wood, I guess we look alike.

Ajay:

Jared Leto

4. What work of art speaks to your soul?

Brandy:

Tracey Emin “The People You Love Become Ghosts Inside of You”

Bill:

Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s “The Fall of the Rebel Angels”

Scott:

Boy these questions are tough. I’m an incredibly indecisive person. I think I’m going to go with the thing you generally think of when you hear the word art. A drawing. I’ve always liked “Hand with Reflecting Sphere” by M. C. Escher. Its pretty fantastic.

Dan:

I’m not  really too familiar with much art, but I like “Starry Night” by Van Gogh.

Ajay:

Photography by Vincent Fournier

5. What books are you currently reading or recommending?

Brandy:

Lately I’ve been reading “The Art of Survival” by Cord Christian Troebst. It’s different than anything I’ve ever read.

Bill:

“The Picture of Dorian Gray” by Oscar Wilde.

Scott:

“Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch” by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman.

Dan:

I’ve been reading a lot of “Playboy,” but only for the articles.

Ajay:

A sociology book and some random photography books.

6. What song or album is currently in heavy rotation on your iPod?

Brandy:

“Anthems for a Seventeen-Year-Old Girl” by Broken Social Scene.

Bill:

The album “Have One On Me” by Joanna Newsom

Scott:

Another toss up. I think I’d have to look at the play count to be sure, but I’m just not going to do that. Sorry. You’ll just have to take my word for it. It’s between the self titled Monsters of Folk and “Nighthawks at the Diner” by Tom Waits. Man oh man  I love me some Tom Waits.

Dan:

“Fate” by Dr. Dog or “We Have the Facts and We’re Voting Yes” by Death Cab for Cutie.

Ajay:

“Yankee Hotel Foxtrot” by Wilco and the new Bright Eyes, “People’s Key,” amazing.

7. What’s the last movie that made you cry?

Brandy:

“Where the Red Fern Grows” about two hunting pups.

Bill:

“Million Dollar Baby”

Scott:

“Everything is Illuminated”…well it wasn’t a real cry. More like a lump in my throat. I’m sorta a heartless robot. With ice in my veins.

Dan:

“Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back”, purely from laughter.

Ajay:

“The Green Mile”

8.  Cat person or dog person?

Brandy:

Both! Although I’m pretty partial to pit bulls.

Bill:

DOG.

Scott:

I think this is another sign of my indecisiveness. I have both cats and dogs.

Dan & Ajay:

Dog person.

9. What is more important, truth or kindness?

Brandy:

Everyone lies sometimes, I suppose it would be worse if you were a liar AND a mean bastard.

Bill:

Neither, love is all you need.

Scott:

Kindness. You can tell the truth and still be a jerk. At least a kind liar can make you feel better about the whole lying thing.

Dan:

Be true, not phonies!

Ajay:

Both are important but I feel kindness before truth. The truth can be damaging if brought out too soon.

10.   How do you define sin?

Brandy:

When one’s actions are harmful or detrimental to oneself or another person.

Bill:

A transgression of a religious or moral law, especially when deliberate. The Dictionary definition but I’m agnostic so its all good.

Scott:

I think a real sin will stick with you. If you can’t get past something you did wrong it was probably a sin, and you’re naughty. Unless you’re a cold hearted robot.

Dan:

I don’t really believe in sin I guess, I can’t really define it haha.

Ajay:

Being bad.

11.   How do you define virtue?

Brandy:

To confront the monster within oneself and to rise above it.

Bill:

The understanding of a lesson learned in life. Alliteration!

Scott:

*pointing thumbs at myself*  haha no.

Dan:

Doing the right thing, even when it’s the most difficult (and it usually is) thing to do.

12.   Design your headstone: What does it say? What does it look like?

Brandy:

I honestly haven’t given it as much thought yet, perhaps I’ll have a better idea when I’ve more fully fulfilled my potential in life. But I would imagine that a burial ceremony would suit those who love me more than it would matter to me at that point.

Bill:

I will not have a headstone because I will hopefully put in a burlap sack and buried in the woods somewhere so i can become a home for other living things.

Scott:

I think it would look like a bumper to a car with stickers. There are so many options. ” If you can read this you’re not dead.” or “You wouldn’t understand its a dead guy thing.” I really hope it turns into a super sweet hang out for stoners. I’ll just let them decorate.

Dan:

“This guy rocked; He was a visually striking man and had the heart of a lion.”

Bonus Question: Who would you like to see answer these questions?

Brandy:

Emily Haines and/or Jenny Lewis

Bill:

My friend Casey Conway also known as C-MAC

Scott:

Tom Waits please.

Dan:

J.D. Salinger
